Spring 2023 brought a tidal wave of excitement as registrations flooded in for the local volleyball league! The league found itself in a bit of a pickle, desperately seeking coaches to balance the teams and avoid a chaotic girl-power overload. Guess who came to the rescue? None other than this dynamic duoāMom and Dad! We gallantly stepped up to coach Stormee's 3rd/4th grade dream team.
Now, imagine this: skills evaluations clashed with Stormee's spring break vacation plans. But fear not, because Grandma swooped in to save the day! It truly takes a village to raise these little athletes. With Grandma's help, our squad of 8 energetic 3rd and 4th graders, including the unstoppable Stormee, was born.
Emails flew out to parents, practice schedules were set, and the season was officially underway! Red became our battle color, and the girls, being the creative minds they are, dubbed themselves the Red Devils.
David and I were rookie coaches, diving headfirst into a sea of volleyball research. We wanted to teach these future superstars without accidentally giving them bad habits. Our coaching mantra? Teamwork, communication, and killer serving and passing skills. Our theory: team trust makes for a winning formula, even if skills are a bit shaky.
As the first game approached, our team transformed into a powerhouse of collaboration. Communication soared, teamwork flourished (well, mostly), and the girls were ready to conquer the court. Of course, being kids, there were those hesitant moments and a few missed balls. Enter the legendary "lap" rule: if a ball hits the ground without anyone trying, it's laps at the next practice. Suddenly, everyone was on the move, and the Red Devils' momentum skyrocketed.
While victory eluded us initially, the tides turned once the girls hit their stride. The game became intense, their drive to improve was off the charts, and Stormee's underhand serving was practically an art form. Sure, quick feet and hustle were lacking, but our ball-drop rule turned things around. Laps meant movement, movement meant hustle, and suddenly, stamina and hustle were on the rise.
The girls' dedication reached new heights with every practice. Pride and determination radiated as we marched to the final four in the end-of-season championship. To celebrate this triumphant journey, we threw an epic party with a pool, an inflatable water slide, go-kart riding, and water balloons. The Red Devils truly rocked the season!
